Oregon Health Plan: Cover Midwives!

Trillium Waterbirth Center has learned that as of 2013, we will lose our ability to bill the Oregon Health Plan (OHP, Oregon State’s Medicaid program) for midwifery care.  WE NEED YOU to help stop this from happening!  Get the details below and TAKE ACTION.

It would have been very easy for this change to go unnoticed.  We could have continued accepting OHP clients, only to discover in January that we would not be paid by OHP for their care.  We are so grateful for our billing specialist Sherri, who discovered this change during a webinar offered by the state.  In the process of re-writing the rules for OHP, the state has eliminated the rule that allowed midwifery clients access to the only OHP plan that currently pays out-of-hospital midwives.  We now have clients enrolled in our Group Prenatal Program who do not know if OHP will cover their care by the time their babies are born.

YOU can stop this from happening.  Contact any and all of the people and organizations linked below and let them know that midwifery care is evidence-based, cost-effective, and important to you.  Remind them that Section 2301 of the federal Affordable Care Act requires state Medicaid programs to cover care provided by licensed midwives in licensed birth centers.  Tell them to make sure every pregnant woman on OHP has coverage for an out-of-hospital midwife and free-standing birth center as soon as she becomes pregnant.  THANK YOU!
